Comment:
Tyrophagus sp. female dorsal view (in S/O Astigmata - small mites with no stigmata , breath through body surface) copra itch mite. Note powerful mandibles, feather-like dorsal setae at bases of first pair of legs. This and other related mites of stored products cause an erythmatous reaction and then develop tiny papular vesicles. In chronic cases an enzema may develop. To examine: Measurements are vital for id of parasites. Mount mites directly in Gum Arabic/ glycerine/ chloral hydrate solution or use drop lactophenol blue or chlorlactophenol, ring with nail polish for a temporary mount or semi-permanent mount - use melted jelly and ring with nail polish or permanent mounts immerse in Decon 90 over night, dehydrate with alcohols, clear methyl salicylate and mount canada balsam.
